PROGRAM OF THE CONSENSUS CONFERENCE
May and June 2010: Scientists, Clinicians, Scientific Societies, Editorial Boards of International Journals, Nursing and Patients’ Societies worldwide have been asked to suggest topics to be included in the consensus conference.
Hundreds of scientists from all continents participated either in person or online. Among the many countries that participated were Albania, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, France, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Iraq, Italy, Japan, Jordania, Kenya, Libya, Lithuania, Mexico, Myanmar, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Rumania, Russia, S. Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, the USA and the UK.
The conference has already been endorsed by the Italian Ministry of Health, the Italian Association of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiologists (ITACTA), the Italian Society of Cardiac Surgeons (SICCH), the Meta-analysis and Evidence-based Medicine Training in Cardiology, “HSR proceedings in intensive care and cardiovascular anesthesia”, EXPO Milano 2015, the SIAARTI (Società Italiana Analgesia Anestesia Terapia Intensiva) study group of cardiothoracic and vascular anesthesia, and the colombian cardiovascular committee of the colombian anesthesia society, AISACE (Italian Critical Care Nurses Association).
.
The aim of this International Consensus Conference is to try and identify all the drugs and techniques that can reduce or increase all-cause mortality in cardiac anesthesia and intensive care, and then to suggest to researchers and donors on which topics they should be focusing when performing trials or financing research in the immediate future.
The Conference will only be considering the most recent randomized evidence either in the form of randomized controlled trials (RCT) or the meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials published in peer-reviewed journals or in congress proceedings (the subgroup analyses of RCTs or the subgroup analyses of meta-analysis of RCTs will be also be considered).
If the identified publication for a specific drug or technique included multiple settings (predominantly, but not exclusively, in cardiac surgery/anesthesia) the participants will decide by consensus whether to include it or not in the final conference proceedings. If mortality is included in a composite endpoint the drug/technique can be included according to the weight of mortality in the composite outcome and to the scientific consensus. Non-randomized evidence or trends towards a statistically significance will only be considered if time permits.
June 20th to June 28th 2010 a web site will allow the participants to vote on the already suggested topics (and to add new ones) as well as to produce the scientific evidence to support the different drugs/techniques. The web page http://consensusconf.hsrproceedings.org/topicsel will be used.
The following PubMed search strategy will also be used to systematically identify related topics:
systematic[sb] AND (surgery[tiab] OR surgic*[tiab] OR operation*[tiab]) AND ((myocardial AND infarction) OR (death* OR survival OR mortality OR prognosis)) AND (prevent* OR reducti* OR reduci*)
June 28th 2010 at the San Raffaele Hospital, Milan, Italy. (DIBIT 2, C2, 2nd Floor).
From 8.00 am to 20.00 pm
Each topic will be briefly presented and the participants will discuss and vote on them.
--if the drug/technique has randomized evidence of a beneficial/detrimental effect on mortality in cardiac surgery
--if the evidence comes from: a large randomized controlled trial (RCT); a meta-analysis of RCTs; a small RCT; from a subgroup analysis of a RCT or of a meta-analysis of RCTs.
--if the studies were performed in the specific setting of cardiac surgery or in similar context.
